UnJournaling

Price: $12.95

Some people just don’t want to share intimate details about their thoughts, feelings and lives—at least not with others in a class or group. That’s where UnJournaling comes in. All the writing prompts in this book are entirely impersonal but completely engaging—for both kids and adults.

Just a couple of examples of the 200 writing prompts on widely varied topics:

  • Write a paragraph about a girl named Dot, but use no letters with a dot (in other words, no i or j).
  • Why on earth would Yankee Doodle stick a feather in his cap and call it “macaroni”? Come up with a plausible explanation.

The book includes sample responses to all of the questions—a helpful tool for anyone who gets stuck with a topic and wants to see that it can be done!

UnJournaling is included in the Bestseller Combo, a well-rounded selection of our most popular books at a savings of 20%.

I would just like to say that your writing activities are wonderful. I sometimes changed my journal writing topics because of your activities. We have a book publishing program at our school called Beyond Basics. After students complete writing assignments, they sit with the program editors editing their papers and then have their work published. I have used ideas from your activities (National Writing Day) and my students have written and have had essays published based on this activity.

What a terrific and engaging book! While I don't mind having warm-ups/openers that prompt discussion, Unjournaling is a light, fun, and engaging way to delve into students' creativity. I also enjoy that many of the entries allow students to stop and think about things like word choice, rhyme schemes, etc. Since I don't get to do enough writing on my own, I also enjoy participating in the openers with my students. I can only hope for a sequel to this one! My deepest thanks!

Unjournaling is my new favorite book!

I use Unjournaling and Yoga for the Brain daily as journal prompts for my sixth grade students. They laugh, talk, and really get the imagination going! My kids no longer whine when it is journal time...they actually remind ME to do it! Great book.

Our weekly writers' workshop uses Unjournaling for our prompt writing each meeting. It continually surprises us that a book aimed at kids is appropriate for professional adult writers. Some of us have expanded these out-of-the-box ideas into saleable pieces!
